The curators of the Museum of Broken Relationships collect heart breaking talismans from anyone willing to part with the symbol of old and done for love. Teddy bears, wedding dresses, sacred soil, an axe and even a prosthetic leg are included in the touring exhibition. Each item is accompanied by a brief account of the heart wrenching trials of its love sick owners and the stories that transform them from objects to mementos. 'Unlike the ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers every individual the chance to overcome the emotional collapse through creation - by contributing to the Museum's collection.'
While CDs, concert tickets and bubble gum wrappers are still alive and well in the wreckage of relationships, the digital age often finds our most important artifacts lost in space; floating through the air above our heads. We should start writing love letters again, good ones, so when the bottom falls out and it all comes tumbling down, we have something to burn and chop up into little pieces.
Curator Olinka Vištica of The Museum of Broken Relationships spoke with Jian Ghomeshi on the Friday February 13th Love Sucks edition of Q the podcast.
