Nueva Esperanza School

Looking to generate long term solutions to low student retention rates, the Al Borde Arquitectos firm struck out to design an inspired place for the children of El Cabuyal Ecuador to learn. Intimately linked to its natural environment, the Nueva Esperanza School's design is a reaction to its standard rectangular concrete counterparts. The project took its cues from local materials, techniques and knowledge; incorporating bamboo walls and a knitted straw roof. In the fisher community of El Cabuyal the school's boat shaped design is a source of pride for the children and their parents. A fine place to start a lifetime of education.
